Lyrics - The Backbone of a Song

Words are the best way to express a feeling, an emotion and a sensation and when they are carefully chosen and some nice music is added, they can change the world. Some of the greatest thoughts of mankind and the ideas that rocked and shook our society's foundations come from musical masterpieces. We all remember "Imagine" and "Jail House Rock": Two entirely different songs that changed the way be move, analyze our world and the way we live. But they would be nothing if it weren't for the lyrics they hold.

Lyrics are the backbone of a song, they are the ones that can make music memorable or can ruin event he best instrument arrangement; imagine the glorious notes of Beethoven's Joyful Hymn with the lyrics of one of Britney's songs. This idea of a match would really kill the very spirit and intensity that Beethoven placed when composing his hymn.

But how can a musician write really memorable songs? All the songs I have mentioned have writers that are long gone.

Well, there are pretty memorable songs today, the common ingredient is that they all focused on writing great lyrics and with the result they have become singles chart hits; focusing not in the money but in the content of the song, leaving the anxiety of fame and fortune behind and writing every day a little more and polishing the writings of the day before.

There is really no point whatsoever in trying to copy the lyrics of past hits. Reusing ideas and thoughts -and lyrics- is not a real good idea. On the other hand, dealing with personal and subjective ideas might not be as good an idea as you might think since not everyone might feel the same way about the general idea.

Education plays an important part in lyric writing too. Learning to handle both objectively and subjectively all the ideas that compound the human psyche can be the difference between forever social music and a flair of the moment hit; education also involves the ability to listen and analyze the great songs of all time, listening to the lyrics wrote by the masters will give you a depth that more often than not eludes the newbie lyric writer.

Don't limit yourself to a single genre. Try them all. A great romantic song writer might have started as a children's song writer and then, somehow discovered he stunk at this but excelled at romantic stuff.

But, sadly, even well written lyrics and well designed instrumental arrangements can often linger forgotten in a drawer for some time before being discovered and really leap to fame, fortune and their rightful place in mankind song universe with singles chart success and music videos to market it. However this is not a big enough reason to discourage or to believe that there is nothing to be done to achieve immortality.

We could engulf all the requirements for writing great and memorable lyrics in hard work and devotion to the art; regardless if you are writing lyrics for a commercial jingle, a children movie, a solo artist or even a band. The sky is the limit and the only thing that stands in your way it's you.
